Welcome to Chicago, 1929, where Ui is on a sociopathic and savage ascent to be top dog. A parable play for present times.
Biting satire meets cabaret in this version of the original play written in 1941. Brecht parallels events leading to Hitler’s rise to power with that of the gangster Ui. Political corruption, and thuggery escalate in a dog eats dog world crawling out of socio-economic depression. Ui rabidly gains ground over Chicago’s cauliflower traders and moves on into Cicero. We are starkly reminded the bitch that bore him is on heat again and moral is that there will always be another Ui.
