Murdering Mary

MFA Acting International

This is the extraordinary true story of Mary Mallon: Irish immigrant. High-end cook. Lover. Fighter. Scapegoat. Lifer.

In 1884 Mary arrives in the land of opportunity and claws her way out of poverty through hard graft and a gift for cooking. But it's her signature dish, her peach cobbler, that unleashes a deadly epidemic among the well-to-do families that employ her.

As an unwitting carrier of disease, she becomes a wanted criminal, then a tabloid scapegoat and finally a test-case for medical ethics. As her ghost prowls the stage in search of  justice, history meets fantasy, audacious theatricality and provocative debate.

Tonderai Munyevu's brand new play, commissioned by East 15, explores Mary's evolving immigrant identities, from her deep desire to belong to her enforced isolation as the infamous Typhoid Mary.
