Sisterhood and the price of silence: Timberlake Wertenbaker’s retelling of the Greek “Philomele” myth – an ‘ancient’ tale with strong contemporary resonances.

The Love of the Nightingale
Written by Timberlake Wertenbaker
Directed by Jules Tipton

Following the city of Athens’ liberation, after its war-time occupation, the grateful king gives his eldest daughter in marriage to his victorious ally as a reward. She dutifully accepts and travels from her culturally sophisticated birthplace to a rugged, darker northern territory over the sea.

Unable to bear her loneliness and isolation, she asks for her beloved younger sister to be sent for. Her husband agrees, and travels to Athens to fetch her.

On the return voyage events unfold which will have cataclysmic repercussions.

Epic themes played out in a stripped back arena ultimately reveal how private acts made public can strike at the heart of both political and personal life.
