The Workman's Wife

Written by Minna Canth.
Translated, adapted and directed by Ronja Siljander.

“The man is the head of the wife. As the cat is the head of the mouse. And it’s too late for the mouse to yawn when it’s halfway inside the cat’s mouth.”

“The Workman’s Wife” is a new translation and adaptation of the Finnish realism classic from 1885, a play that heavily commented on the social unjust that held men in power over their wives in the time when women were seen as a lesser gender.

The author, Minna Canth, is often considered to be the ‘Mother of Finnish literature’. Her masterpiece about two protagonist women, whose lives are destroyed by one moral-escaping alcoholic man, started a so-called 'book war' in Finland and its themes of lack of women’s rights and laws that favour men are still relevant to this day.

12+. Contains scenes and imagery of physical and mental abuse, sexual and offensive language and live gunshot sounds.

This production will be live-streamed from our Corbett Theatre in Loughton to our YouTube Channel at 6:00pm on Thursday 8th October.
