Featuring songs that have become classics of the American Musical Theatre tradition mixed with a provocative Brechtian form Cabaret is a beguiling musical that not only captivates it’s audience but also offers a social commentary on post World War 1 Germany.
Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it centres around the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub where English cabaret performer Sally Bowles is struggling to make a living. She meets an American writer at the club on his first night in town and their meeting blossoms into a dream-like romance. Time passes and the hedonistic atmosphere in Berlin changes quickly to violence as the Nazi party rises to power and Antisemitism takes hold. The Kit Kat Klub becomes a metaphor for the ominous political developments in late Weimar Germany.
