One
of the UK's most innovative acting schools, East 15 has been training actors for
over 50 years. The School was born from the work of Joan Littlewood's world
famous Theatre Workshop. It has produced successful actors, producers, directors
and theatre technicians from across the world.
East 15 summer courses are aimed at anyone aged 17 and over, who wish to extend their existing talents and/or those with an excitement and passion for theatre, who are looking for ways to creatively engage with character development and performance skills, taught by the school’s experienced resident staff, using the approaches to learning drawn from the full time courses, that have made East 15 such a success.

2013 Summer Courses
IN SOUTHEND
July 15th to 19th.
Advanced Stage Combat Course Code S/ASC01 FEE: £350
This one week course is designed for advanced stage combatants with previous training and /or fight experience in the industry – it will offer the opportunity to brush up on weapons skills – and possibly experiment with new systems that you have not encountered. There is no affiliated certificate but you will be exploring a different weapon system each day with the Head of BA Acting & Stage Combat and Chair of the British Academy of Dramatic Combat, Nick Hall and the Head of Programmes at Southend and professional stage and screen fight arranger, Chris Main.
Samba Workshop Course Code S/SW01 FEE: £350
This one week course will take you on a journey to investigate and perform the amazing rhythms of South America. You will have the chance to experience drumming, singing and movement in this practical exploration of the physicality and instrumentation of a unique and exciting celebration of Brazilian culture. The workshop is run by Steven Douse, Southend’s Head of Music, and an internationally known professional musician and arranger and Steffany George, Southend’s Head of Movement and choreographer, dancer and movement director from New York.

Teachers’ Professional Development Workshop: Rehearsal Techniques Course Code S/TPDW/RT FEE: £350
This 3-day course exposes participants to methods of rehearsals, led by full-time staff from varying departments of East 15 Acting School. It is aimed at those who are preparing their students for entry to Drama School and will provide an insight to the techniques and expectations that your students will meet upon entering a professional training programme. During the sessions, different professionals will share their methods of work that can, in turn, inform your own teaching practice. Maximum 12 delegates on this course.

Teachers’ Professional
Development Workshop:
Shakespeare by the Sea Course Code S/TPDW/SBS FEE £350
This 3-day course will explore a variety of rehearsal methods that will help you and your students get to grips with rehearsing and directing scenes from Shakespeare. Drawing from a wealth of experience the course will explore: verse analysis; contextualization of the plays; rehearsal techniques and methods to approaching the text. The course will introduce you to the demands expected at Drama School and give you practical experiences that can inform your own teaching practice. The course will be led by Dr. Chris Main, who as well as being Head of Programmes Southend also holds a PhD in Elizabethan Theatre. Maximum 12 delegates on this course

Audition Technique Course Code S/AT01 FEE: £350
Always a highlight of the Summer programme, our first week is led by Adrian James, full-time Acting Tutor at East 15 Southend, and supported by other full-time staff at East 15, this one-week course guides students through the audition process and helps to demystify it. Participants will be shown how to present themselves to their best advantage at an audition. You will get a chance to work on speeches and songs as you work alongside staff all hugely experienced in the process. For those considering drama school applications and who might be considering East 15 as a prospect, the cost of an East 15 audition in the next academic year will be refunded against the course fee.

July 22nd to 26th

Participants will be shown how to present themselves to their best advantage at an audition. You will get a chance to work on speeches and songs as you work alongside staff all hugely experienced in the process. For those considering drama school applications and who might be considering East 15 as a prospect, the cost of an East 15 audition in the next academic year will be refunded against the course fee.
Introduction to Acting Course Code L/ITA01 FEE: £350
This week long course serves as an introduction to some of the work you would encounter at a recognised Drama School. Led by Monique Wilson, Head of the MA Acting (International) and supported by other full-time staff from East 15, you will be introduced to our methodology of work through sessions in movement, singing, and voice as well, of course, as acting. It is an ideal way to understand our practice and the demands that professional actor training will place upon those taking up places at East 15. As well as being an introduction to professional-level training, it will provide you with experience that can help you prepare for auditions. Included in the price is the ‘audition fee’ for East 15, if you chose to apply in the following academic year.
Theatre Directing: TEXT Course Code L/TD01 FEE: £350 *
* This course can be combined with the Devising course for a fee of £600 for two weeks
The one week course is designed for those with theatre experience, but not necessarily in a directing capacity. This 1-week course will look at approaches to text with East’s 15 Head of Theatre Directing, Tony Clark (previously, Artistic Director at Hampstead Theatre). During the week Tony will draw from his wealth of experience and share some of his approaches to working on text and his insight into the professional industry.
Drama School Graduates Refresher Course Code L/DSG01 FEE: £350
This is a week-long course for graduates of recognized drama schools (either 3 years or a post-graduate programme) who are looking for the opportunity to further develop their craft and brush up on previously acquired skills since graduating. Led by East 15’s Head of MA Acting, Andrea Brooks, with supporting classes from the Music, Voice and Movement Departments – you will get the chance to fine-tune your voice, body and imagination over a challenging and exciting programme of work.
July 29th to August 2nd.
Theatre Directing: DEVISING Course Code L/TD02 FEE: £350*
* This course can be combined with the Text course for a fee of £600 for two weeks
East 15 has a strong tradition in both improvisation and creating and provocative new work. This one-week programme of study, led by the international pairing of Uri Roodner (Head of BA Acting & Contemporary Theatre) and Zois Pigadas (Head of Contextual Studies), will explore ways and styles of devising new work. Whether you are a director looking to expand your methods of rehearsal or an actor interested in creating your own show, this practice-based workshop will challenge and excite you.
Audition Technique Course Code L/AT03 FEE: £350
Always a highlight of the Summer programme, our third week is led by Gerry McAlpine, Head of First Year Acting and the Foundation Degree Course and supported by other full-time staff at East 15, this one-week course guides students through the audition process and helps to demystify it. Participants will be shown how to present themselves to their best advantage at an audition. You will get a chance to work on speeches and songs as you work alongside staff all hugely experienced in the process. For those considering drama school applications and who might be considering East 15 as a prospect, the cost of an East 15 audition in the next academic year will be refunded against the course fee.
Introduction to Stage Combat - Foundation Certificate Course Code L/ISC01 FEE: £380
In this weeklong course you will work with teachers from East 15’s BA Acting & Stage Combat programme to learn the basics of both unarmed combat and swordplay. This programme is aimed at those with little or no experience who are interested in gaining a foundation of skills and an introduction to the demands of acting staged-violence. At the conclusion of the course, you will be eligible to test for a Foundation Level Certificate from the British Academy of Dramatic Combat.
July 29th to 31st.

Facilities
Loughton Campus

East
15's Loughton Campus, with its Georgian dower house, studios and mediaeval tithe
barn (now a professionally equipped 125-seat theatre) in a glorious six-acre
campus on the outskirts of London, provides excellent rehearsal and performance
facilities, all set amidst the natural beauty of our gardens and lawns. This is
an ideal place to study and yet only a short trip from central London.
Southend Campus
East
15's Clifftown Theatre along with the Gateway Building provides a superb
state-of-the-art training facility in vibrant Southend. With 13 studio spaces
and a 160 seat theatre, students are able to explore their work in well equipped
spaces, purpose built to support performers. The Campus is close to Southend
Central and Southend Victoria railway stations, with journey times to London
Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street taking less than one hour. The campus is
also able to offer on-site accommodation.
Accommodation
East 15 can provide information regarding a wide variety of local accommodation in the area. The Loughton Campus is unable to offer accommodation on site.
Southend has accommodation available on site in our new Halls of Residence – University Square and can be booked for an additional cost. For more detailed information about the Southend Accommodation, please contact East 15 Admissions via venues@essex.ac.uk
