2012 Easter and Summer Courses
One
of the UK's most innovative acting schools, East 15 has been training actors for
over 50 years. The School was born from the work of Joan Littlewood's world
famous Theatre Workshop. It has produced successful actors, producers, directors
and theatre technicians from across the world.
East 15 summer courses are aimed at anyone aged 17 and over, who wish to extend their existing talents and/or those with an excitement and passion for theatre, who are looking for ways to creatively engage with character development and performance skills, taught by the school’s experienced resident staff, using the approaches to learning drawn from the full time courses, that have made East 15 such a success.

EASTER 2012
Audition Technique - A Special Intensive Weekend Course Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd April in Loughton - Fee: £210
This is an intensive two-day course, using similar approaches to the one week audition technique course. Working in smaller groups, the course provides tips and hints on how to achieve your potential at audition. Participants will need to bring two speeches for presentation.
SUMMER 2012
Introduction to Acting (one week) Monday 16th to Friday 20th July in Loughton - Fee: £350
This one-week foundation course provides an introduction basic acting techniques and approaches to character, including textual analysis, scene study, voice work and movement skills.
Exploring Shakespeare (four weeks) 16th July – 10th August in Southend - Fee: £1400
East 15’s brand new Shakespeare Summer Workshop programme is designed to demystify Shakespeare and make it accessible to anyone interested in studying and performing the Shakespearian Classics.
The course includes classes in;
- Voice
- Speaking verse and prose
- Movement including Period Dance
- Acting Classes & Rehearsals
- Textual Analysis
- Scene Studies
The work culminates in a closed presentation of pieces at our Clifftown Theatre. Please be aware that the work is not open to the public. The course includes visits to historic London and it’s Theatres. Accommodation is available for this course at an additional cost. Please see the section on Accommodation
Audition Technique (one week) Monday 16th to Friday 20th July in Loughton Monday 23rd to Friday 27th July in Southend Fee: £350 each week
This one-week course guides students through the audition process and helps to demystify it. Participants will be shown how to present themselves to their best advantage at an audition, along with tips on choice of speech.
Participants should prepare two pieces prior to arrival – one classical and one modern, as well as a song. Each should be no more than three minutes long, although the course leader might suggest alternative pieces, so be prepared!
Acting for Camera (one week) Monday 16th to Friday 20th July in Loughton - Fee: £425
This intensive practical one-week course is for those who already have some experience in acting and wish to broaden their skills on camera. Students will have the opportunity to develop existing skills and learn how to adapt them to film and television. The programme will also cover audition techniques, sight-reading, what to expect on set and the opportunity to film short scenes.
Theatre Directing (two weeks) 16th July to 27th July in Loughton - Fee: £650
This two-week course explores text, the actor-director relationship, production planning, research and rehearsal methods. There will be practical sessions where you will be working to direct actors and opportunities to gain insight and hear the experiences of professional theatre directors. The course will include at least one theatre trip into central London to help contextualise the class work.
Stage Management and Technical Theatre Monday 23rd to Friday 27th July in Loughton - Fee: £350
This course offers an introduction to the backstage technical disciplines required in creating a theatre production. The course uses both the Corbett Theatre and the scenic production workshops to deliver this practical hands-on training. The course offers an insight into stage management, lighting, sound, prop making, set construction and costume and is an ideal course for those interested in exploring or developing their backstage skills!
Stage Combat (one week) Monday 23rd to Friday 27th July in Southend - Fee: £425
Students on this introductory, week-long course learn armed and unarmed combat techniques with a professional Fight Director. In the later stages of the course students develop a short choreographed dramatic fight sequence in pairs and are given an opportunity to achieve a foundation level award with the British Academic of Dramatic Combat (All Weapons Provided)
Physical Theatre (one week) Monday 23rd to Friday 27th July in Southend - Fee: £350
This
intensive five-day course is aimed at anyone with an interest in looking for new
ways of integrating movement into character or bringing greater physicality to
the production. Participants will be introduced to a range of physical
techniques including playing with breath, tension and the generation of meaning,
the exploration of music, painting and mask and their transfer into territories
of comedy, drama and tragedy.
Facilities
Loughton Campus

East
15's Loughton Campus, with its Georgian dower house, studios and mediaeval tithe
barn (now a professionally equipped 125-seat theatre) in a glorious six-acre
campus on the outskirts of London, provides excellent rehearsal and performance
facilities, all set amidst the natural beauty of our gardens and lawns. This is
an ideal place to study and yet only a short trip from central London.
Southend Campus
East
15's Clifftown Theatre along with the Gateway Building provides a superb
state-of-the-art training facility in vibrant Southend. With 13 studio spaces
and a 160 seat theatre, students are able to explore their work in well equipped
spaces, purpose built to support performers. The Campus is close to Southend
Central and Southend Victoria railway stations, with journey times to London
Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street taking less than one hour. The campus is
also able to offer on-site accommodation.
Accommodation
East 15 can provide information regarding a wide variety of local accommodation in the area. The Loughton Campus is unable to offer accommodation on site.
