INTERNATIONAL AUDITIONS

Overseas Acting Auditions require 2 x 2minute monologues, one from the past, one from the present. Filmmaking and Theatre Directing applicants will be interviewed and may, if they wish, support their application with a portfolio and/or showreel of work.

UK AUDITIONS

Undergraduate auditions

Auditions are required for all students undertaking courses that involve acting.

Student performance, photo by Nigel LuckhurstApplicants based in the UK are offered an audition, which is typically a full day event (commencing at 11am and completed by 6pm). Auditions and interviews generally take place at the campus where the course is based, either the Loughton Campus or the Southend Campus. The auditions run from December through to June.

International applicants may submit a video audition if they can not attend an audition in the UK. Occasionally, depending on the availability of East 15 staff, they may be auditioned in their home country. International applicants who are submitting a video audition will need to read the notes for video auditions which are attached to the East 15 application form, which is also available on this website.

Audition are required for all applications for acting-based courses (BA Acting, BA Acting and Community Theatre BA Acting and Contemporary Theatre, Certificate of Higher Education in Theatre Arts, MA Acting, MA/MFA Acting (International)

The audition consists of a movement workshop as well as presentation of audition speeches. Some students may be invited to attend additional workshop sessions on the day of their audition.

For audition purposes each candidate must perform two contrasting speeches:

• One speech from a Shakespearean or Jacobean play lasting no more than one and a half minutes

• One speech from a contemporary play (post 1950) lasting no more than two minutes

In addition;

Applicants for BA Acting, BA Acting and Community Theatre and Certificate of Higher Education in Theatre Arts (CertHE) should also prepare a third speech, lasting no more than two minutes, that contrasts well with the contemporary (post 1950) speech.

Applicants for BA Acting and Contemporary Theatre should also prepare a third presentation that is preferably something you have created (be it a piece of writing, music or visual art)

Applicants for physical-based courses (BA Acting and Stage Combat and BA Physical Theatre) will participate in a physical workshop in which fitness and agility will be assessed. Please wear a tracksuit or dance clothes in readiness.

Applicants for BA World Performance

Applicants will participate in a workshop and discussion group.

Applicants for FdA/BA Stage Management and Technical Theatre

Applicants must attend an interview and technical aptitude workshop. Students should bring with them a portfolio of their work, demonstrating their experience in technical theatre, and will have to prepare a task which will be discussed on the day of the interview.

MA Filmmaking and MA/MFA Theatre Directing

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their written application, although they may occasionally be called for interview.

 

Postgraduate auditions

Acting-based courses (MA Acting, MA/MFA in Acting (International)

Auditions are required for all students undertaking courses that involve acting.

Applicants based in the UK are offered an audition, which is typically a full day event (commencing at 11am and completed by 6pm). Auditions and interviews generally take place at the campus where the course is based, either the Loughton Campus or the Southend Campus. The auditions run from December through to June.

International applicants may submit a video audition if they can not attend an audition in the UK. Occasionally, depending on the availability of East 15 staff, they may be auditioned in their home country.

The audition consists of a series of workshops as well as presentation of audition speeches. Applicants will generally receive feedback and suggestions during the audition.

The East 15 audition process is very thorough and has been commended for the opportunity it provides for applicants to demonstrate their full potential. Many UK acting schools restrict applicants to a three minute audition; by comparison East 15 offers a period lasting up to six hours, including opportunities to ask questions and engage with staff.

For audition purposes each candidate must perform two contrasting short speeches:

  • One speech from a Shakespearean or Jacobean play, lasting not more than one and a half minutes.
  • One speech from a contemporary (post 1950) lasting not more than two minutes

International applicants who are submitting a video audition will need to read the notes for video auditions which are attached to the East 15 application form, which is also available on this website.

Courses not requiring an audition (MA in Filmmaking, MA/MFA Theatre Directing)

Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their written application, although they may occasionally be called for interview.
