At the University of Essex curiosity prevails, where exploring new ways of thinking and pushing boundaries, isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. We are committed to two things: excellence in teaching and excellence in research. Our students are members of a unique, transformational living and learning experience which empowers them with the skills to make a difference to the world around them.
50 years of success
In 2014 we celebrated our 50th anniversary. In those 50 years have become one of the UK’s leading academic institutions, ranking in the top 20 UK universities for research excellence, and top five for social science research (REF 2014). In 2014 we ranked sixth out of mainstream English universities for student satisfaction. THE and QS World Rankings place us in the top 2% of world universities.
Essex is a genuine global community. With more than 130 countries represented within our student body, and 40% of our students from overseas, we are one of the most internationally-diverse universities in the UK. Internationalism is in our DNA.
Three unique campuses
The University has more than 11,000 students at three campuses in Essex, and has partnerships with education institutions across the region. The University’s original campus is situated in an attractive 200-acre parkland estate on the outskirts of Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester.
Our newest campus is located in the heart of the county’s most famous seaside town, Southend-on-Sea, on the south Essex coast with our East 15 Acting School based both at our Southend and Loughton campuses.
