A very different 48 hours

Two East 15 students are spending 48 hours in a car as part of the contextual studies element of their course.

Carrie Acors and Darrell Jackson, both in the final-year of their BA Contemporary Theatre course will start the experiment at the car park at East 15 at 9pm on Friday 1 February.

Carrie explains: ‘The rules are that there is no communication with the outside world, so we cannot get out the car and have one tank of petrol to last the 48 hours. There will be no eating just drinking water and we have to carry out necessary toilet duties in the car. Although spectators can send us feedback via text message, we are not allowed to reply! It will be interesting for us to go through this experience - are we the new David Blaine?’

As well as being a very different way to spend their weekend, Carrie and Darrell are aiming to challenge the boundaries between a stunt and a piece of theatre or performance art through this experiment.

One of the UK's most innovative acting schools, East 15 has been providing professional training for those wishing to work in theatre, film, TV, radio and related fields for more than 40 years. It has a campus in Loughton, just 12 miles outside London and, in September 2000, became part of the University of Essex. Since then a strategy has been developed to expand East 15's provision to the University's new campus in Southend-on-Sea.

Alumni of East 15 include actresses Alison Steadman and Annette Badland, Coronation Street star Jenny Platt, playwright April de Angelis, former artistic director of The Bush Theatre, Mike Bradwell, and director Stephen Daldry, who was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his feature films The Hours and Billy Elliott.
